Roaster Focus: Balance Coffee

Balance Coffee is another one of those wonderful things born out of Lockdown. With the boom in WFH and the sudden surge in people like you and me needing a decent brew at home, Balance Coffee was born and ready to scale*.

* Sorry about that hideous pun. But we had to use it at some point.

Just check out this Balance Coffee packaging

Before we go too far, let’s just stop for a moment and look at the gorgeous Balance Coffee packaging. In a world of OTT, super-bold and in-your-face-shouty kind of branding, we just love the muted, calm and minimalistic packaging. It’s just so balanced.

Ah, yes, maybe that’s why they’re called Balance Coffee.

We love it. Even if you’re not a coffee drinker you really need to have some of these in your kitchen to prove to your mates what sophisticated and subtle taste you have.

But damn, that would be a shame not to drink it.

So, who is Balance Coffee?

James Bellis, the founder of Balance Coffee says that “drinking ethical and sustainable coffee is no longer a choice”. After 8 years of working in the industry, he took the plunge and set up the company right in the middle of the pandemic, using his vision and passion for coffee “as a tool to create change”.

Let’s quote James again:

“For me, balance is the key to living your best life! We’re all trying our best to balance our dream career and personal pursuits. The thing that connects all of life’s moments together, is coffee. That little cup of joy that motivates me to bring my A game at work, that creates intimate memories with family and friends. The fuel for my workouts and that moment of pause with my favourite book. So why settle for anything less than exceptional coffee? The word ‘balance’ is also a fantastic description for our perfectly roasted coffees. When brewed, they provide a flawlessly balanced cup of coffee.”

We love it, James!

Balance Coffee & the Ethical Stuff

As they said, “drinking ethical and sustainable coffee is no longer a choice”. So what are they doing about it?

They plant trees

Balance Coffee have teamed up with Ecologi, who are planning to plant one billion trees (that’s 1,000,000,000 if you use the number format) to reduce the effects of CO2. That’s a lot of trees! So far, Balance Coffee has contributed 396 trees. Only 999,999,604 left to go!

They donate to charity

For every bag of coffee you buy from Balance Coffee, they donate 1% to Project Waterfall, a charity initiative bringing clean drinking water, sanitation and education to coffee growing communities. Check it out here.

They recycle and reuse

Since the beginning of this year they’ve switch to 100% recyclable packaging. In their roastery, they’ve cut water usage down by 33% and recycle everything they possibly can. Every little helps!
