MICE2022 – the Melbourne International Coffee Expo is back!

It’s over a year away, but the MICE2022 is back in September next year. Head here for your early-bird tickets.

Apart from the usual innovations and coffee drinking, they’re also hosting The World Barista Championship and World Brewers Cup.

It’s Bean Too Hot: new Coffee Documentary

According to this documentary by Czech filmmaker Hedvika Michnová, coffee could be gone forever by the end of the century.

In this video, premiering on the 7th of September, Michnová takes us deep into coffee communities in Tanzania and Costa Rica.

The documentary “tells the story of coffee heroes – smallholder farmers who are fighting climate change every day to save their livelihoods and your daily cup of coffee.”

Pret a Manger staff handed a fresh pay cut

Pret a Manger have suffered during the pandemic, along with most of the high street coffee shops. Their staff, like many other chains, were handed a pay cut. But now that their business remains “significantly below” pre-COVID levels, they’ve been told that the pay cut is permanent.

Staff strikes are on the way.

Yet another study on how good coffee is for you

Don’t listen to those people who say you should be cutting back. This study shows how:

  • Drinking coffee reduces the risk of chronic liver disease by a fifth
  • Us coffee drinkers are less likely to develop fatty liver disease or liver cancer
  • It reduces the risk of a host of other nasties including heart disease, neurological health and depression

Keep on drinking that stuff!

Caffeine: How Caffeine Created the Modern World

A very interesting audio book available on Audible, this book is a very interesting take on caffeine as the “most-used drug in the world” and also the only drug we give children as a treat.

It’s a fascinating listen, and a great way to spend a couple of hours. Michael Pollan, the author, runs through how coffee was discovered and how it’s changed the course of history.

“Caffeine, it turns out, has changed the course of human history – won and lost wars, changed politics, dominated economies. What’s more, the author shows that the Industrial Revolution would have been impossible without it. The science of how the drug has evolved to addict us is no less fascinating. And caffeine has done all these things while hiding in plain sight!”

Rens 2.0 Shoes – you can run on coffee

Rens aren’t new, but they’ve release a shoe version 2. It’s a high performance sneaker made partly from used coffee grounds, and partly from recycled coffee cups. They’re lightweight, waterproof, odour-resistant and have UV protection. Oh, they’re also 100% vegan, in case you want to eat them.
