Cometeer Coffee: A new day on earth for coffee. (but what about the UK?)

Cometeer coffee have made the headlines recently for their new product: Cryogenically preserved coffee extract capsules. But when is Cometeer going to be available in the UK?

This American company describe itself as “a technology company in the coffee industry”. And they’re pretty serious. In 2019 they raised $50 million in capital to allow them to scale and expand.

What is Cometeer coffee?

We’ll quote them:

“Cometeer is a startup coffee technology and manufacturing company. We’ve developed and patented the first frozen, cryogenically preserved coffee capsule in partnership with the nation’s finest roasters. It’s driven by a revolutionary extraction system that results in what might just be the most flavorful cup of coffee on Earth, prepared conveniently at home in a fully recyclable and environmentally friendly manner. We believe our product is going to revolutionize the $80+ billion coffee industry.”

Cometeer: “We’re coffee nerds so you don’t have to be”

The premise is this: There are so many variables involved in extracting the perfect coffee, including particle size, water chemistry, water temperature and pressure, oxidation, extraction yield and the total amount of dissolved solids in a cup. That’s not all. You need to think about the bean’s moisture content, roast level and grind size.

In conclusion, it can be pretty hit and miss.

And that means that us mere coffee lovers (that is, we love coffee but are not full-on coffee nerds) are not always going to get the perfect cup of coffee.

Here’s the promise: all you need to do is melt the coffee and enjoy it. Read on to find out more.

Cometeer starts with the best coffee beans for the best brew

They’ve partnered with some of the best roasters in the USA, and have done their utmost to bring out the best from every coffee they use. But when will they come to the UK, and do their thing here as well?

(Speaking of the finest coffee, you need to have a look at this Assembly x Alex Delany: Daterra Masterpieces Limted Edition coffee. It’s epic.)

Cometeer promise perfection, every time:

“Our proprietary technology allows flavor and aroma compounds to be extracted with unprecedented precision. Cometeer coffee consistently achieves optimal total dissolved solids count (aka amazing flavor) and extraction levels. Basically, it’s a level of brewing perfection great baristas aspire to. We achieve it consistently, in every cup.”

They then freeze it at nearly -200 degrees Celsius

As soon as they extract the coffee, they pour it into the capsules and dunk them into a nitrogen bath at -196 degrees Celsius. This means the coffee is frozen super-fast, without losing any freshness and flavour. And most importantly, it has no additives.

Is Cometeer coffee sustainable?

They say that their process is “uniquely suited to reducing waste, at every step.” Here’s how:

The capsules are 100% recyclable aluminium, and because it doesn’t contain any coffee grounds, they can be easily recycled.

In addition, there’s less food waste, because they have an 18+ month shelf life, and you never need to make too much and chuck it out.

In addition, all the leftover coffee goes to a local composting company.

So, is Cometeer coffee available in the UK or Europe?

In short: Cometeer coffee is currently only distributed in the USA, and is not available in the UK.

Might this be changing though? James Hoffmann recently dropped this video on his YouTube channel, filmed at the Cometeer HQ in Gloucester USA:

In this video he says: “I am here at Cometeer in Gloucester, Massachusetts… Now a couple of important disclosures. I’m here for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I’m here to taste some of the extractions, some of the capsules they’ve made of Square Mile’s Coffee, and secondly I do have an ongoing relationship with Cometeer.”
