Sustainable coffee grown in a lab?

A Finnish company called VTT has grown coffee cells in a bioreactor using cellular agriculture, with the aim of making coffee production more sustainable. Helpfully, the first batches grown “smell and taste like conventional coffee”.

Yet another study showing how good coffee is for you

Another day, another study about coffee and health, this time by the European Society of Cardiology.

“Our results suggest that regular coffee consumption is safe, as even high daily intake was not associated with adverse cardiovascular outcomes and all-cause mortality after a follow-up of 10 to 15 years. Moreover, 0.5 to 3 cups of coffee per day was independently associated with lower risks of stroke, death from cardiovascular disease, and death from any cause.”

Oh yeah, keep drinking that stuff.

Six new species of coffee discovered in northern Madagascar

Guess what? We now have a total of 130 known species of coffee on this planet, after discovering these six new varieties. Sadly, they’re not much use for commercial use, but it’s quite exciting considering how little genetic diversity there is in the realms of coffee.

These Steak and Coffee Chips are approved by science

Slightly less scientific than the first three newsbytes, these potato crisps (chips for our non-UK readers) are apparently a flavour matched in a lab. But, the small print reads “We’ve measured the compatibility of regular steak and coffee, not this product”. And they’re only available in Japan, so we’re not going to see them in the UK any time soon.

Smeg launches their first bean to cup coffee machine

Yeah, it looks a bit like a mini Smeg fridge.

The new La Marzocco Florentine Linea Mini

Just as retro but a million times more cool than the aforementioned “fridge” coffee machine.

La Marzocco have launched a limited edition mini espresso machine “dedicated to those who want to bring an exceptional cafè experience at home”.

Yep, it’s nice.
