A Fruity Decaf Coffee with Flavours of Malt Loaf

Let’s do a little imagining…

Think about a dense, treacly slice of malt loaf. It’s still warm from the oven and you’ve spread it thickly with butter. So much that you leave teeth marks when you take a bite (just how it should be). Now top your fruity malt loaf with slices of Bramley apple, baked gently with brown sugar, and top it with orange zest. Luscious, isn’t it?

But come down from Cloud Nine, because Two Chimps have made this a reality – coffee style!

The new Earmuffs for Elephants coffee from Two Chimps Coffee treats us to flavours of malt loaf, baked apple, nut and orange. It’s every decaf lover’s dream! It’ll leave a fair few caffeinated fans smitten, too…

About Two Chimps Coffee

Two Chimps Coffee are a climate-positive coffee roastery based in Rutland. They’re passionate (okay, slightly obsessed…) about helping us coffee lovers enjoy the freshest coffee at home.

Because, when it comes to coffee, fresh is best. Freshness is what makes a cup taste vibrant and moreish and five-star delicious. It’s what takes a good cup and turns it into a great one! That’s why Two Chimps source and roast high-scoring speciality beans multiple times throughout the week. Head roaster Andy always hand-roasts and creates bespoke roasting recipes for each coffee. Together with their weekly small-batch roasting, this ensures every bag of Two Chimps is brimming with flavour!

Two Chimps Coffee are also big on putting the planet first. Because great coffee shouldn’t harm the planet, right? Their roastery is carbon neutral and they recently switched to a green-hosted website, too. We also like the fact that their coffee bags are fully recyclable – even the stickers!

Oh, and the names they give their coffees always crack us up…

Coffee from a Family Farm

Okay, back to the decaf. Two Chimps source their Earmuffs for Elephants coffee from Nicaragua’s Nueva Segovia region. It’s grown by Julio and Octavio Peralta on the El Bosque farm , which has been in the Peralta family since the early 20th century. Julio and Octavio have been developing their coffee-growing methods since 2008, creating unmissable coffees full of curious natural flavours. And this fruity, apple-ish coffee? We think it’s one of the best!

Nicaragua might not be the first country that springs to mind when you think of coffee. But Nicaraguan coffee is well worth a sip. Political disturbances and natural disasters made coffee production tricky in the last century, but the country harvests some exceptional coffees today. Nicaraguan coffee tends to boast very high levels of traceability, plus fruity flavours and complex acidity.

Chemical-free Decaffeination – that’s what we like!

Earmuffs for Elephants is a light roast decaf coffee. Often, decafs taste a bit lacklustre and dull, but not Earmuffs for Elephants! This flavour-packed decaf is decaffeinated by the Carbon Dioxide Process, a gentle, chemical-free method that gets an A* for preserving flavour!

How does it work? Firstly, the decaffeination team soak the green beans in water before bathing them in carbon dioxide at very high pressures. The carbon dioxide (a natural gas) acts as a solvent to draw the caffeine from the green beans. It also – crucially – leaves the larger-moleculed flavoured compounds in place!

When the pressure is released, the caffeine-containing carbon dioxide returns to a gaseous state, leaving the caffeine behind as it does so. It’s just plain carbon dioxide now, so can be reused and recycled. A great bit of efficiency, right there!
