Waitrose Compostable Coffee Pods: The first supermarket to introduce home compostable coffee capsules

Waitrose, the first supermarket to peddle organic produce, (since 1983, since you ask) and the Greenpeace #1 supermarket league table leader, have now launched a range of Waitrose Compostable Coffee Pods. These are a home compostable coffee capsule alternative for Nespresso style machines.

Their previous capsules which were made from mixed polypropylene with an aluminium lid. These, as we know are the absolute devil when it comes to recycling.

The new Waitrose Compostable Coffee Pods are made from bio-sourced materials. These include sunflower seed bark and sugars derived from corn, all of which are fully compostable.  The lid, for example, is made of cellulose and can be home composted as well.  What about the box, Waitrose?  Yep, the box is fully recyclable as well.

Where can I buy Waitrose Compostable Coffee Pods?

At Waitrose!

Head over here for your fix.

“Prompted by the pandemic, we have seen a significant rise in coffee sales in the last 12 months, up by 39%, as customers stayed at home and replaced their office or High Street coffee with a homemade roast.  John Lewis also saw an increase in sales for coffee capsule machines. Even after lockdown, this trend is expected to continue as people work from home more in the future.”

There are four blends available, including Espresso, Lungo, Ristretto and Decaf.

Polly Astbury, Waitrose Coffee Buyer says: “We’re working hard so that all our packaging can be more easily recycled, reusable or home compostable in the next two years. After a year of so many cups of coffee, it was essential we looked for a more sustainable material. As coffee grains can also be used as a fertiliser,  making our capsules home compostable was an ideal alternative.”

Waitrose Compostable Coffee Pods reviews:

Nespresso compatability seems to be a bugbear with reviewers:

“The biggest issue with these pods isn’t the coffee so much, but compatibility with my Nespresso machine, poor or occasionally no flow and machine shut down as well.”

“It says compatible with Nespresso machine but definitely not! Capsule stucked on my coffee machine and no coffee coming out at all. You clearly need to change that information as it’s not suitable for Nespresso machine!”

Others, however, are more positive:

“Although strong, lovely and smooth. One of the best supermarket own brand pods I have tried. Will definitely buy again.”

“I am always looking for coffee pods that are easy to recycle but still give you a good flavour, these really fit the bill.”

Give them a go!

“Because I sometimes shopped in Waitrose, I thought I was actually quite posh. I’ve realised that I’m basically a scullery maid.”
