Only in Japan: Coca-Cola release freeze dried tea and coffee cubes

Forever innovating, Coca-Cola Japan have released their latest thing: Freeze dried coffee cubes. But for the love of everything that’s good, we’re struggling to find even one reason to like these.

There’s plenty of good coming out of Japan this year, and we’re specifically talking about coffee. UCC Coffee released their new brand Ueshima Coffee Company, Hario introduced us to the W60 Dripper (or the Wee-60 Dripper as we like to call it) and last but not least, your Uncle Masatoshi started vending freshly roasted coffee beans in his effort to beat the pandemic.

So it’s come as a bit of a nasty jar when our admiration for all things Japanese was spoiled by the arrival of these coffee cubes. Maybe it’s just because we haven’t tasted them yet, but they do seem rather pointless.

It’s not the first time someone has tried to reinvent coffee, we’ve had Atomo Coffee, the people making coffee without coffee, causing rather a stir in the industry. We’ve also had Cometeer introduce “Incredibly delicious coffee made impossibly convenient” in the form of flash frozen gourmet coffee. We like the sound of this one, and Cometeer, if you’re reading this, we’d love to get involved.

But, back to these coffee cube things.

What are the Coca-Cola “1,2, Cube” Coffee Cubes?

They’re part of a range of three new drinks: coffee, barley tea and green tea. You simply drop a cube into hot or cold water and stir. Ta-daaah! You now have a decidedly mediocre hot or cold beverage in your midst.

We’ll pass, thanks.

They’re apparently ideal for those “on the go” who want a brew that’s “perfect to pack for excursions” or just those who want to “simply enjoy at home with less washing involved”. Washing what?

Just drop into water. Happy time to you.

Credit where credit’s due, they’re packaged in paper bags, and not individually wrapped, in an effort to be more sustainable.

Meanwhile, we’ll keep looking for something a bit more appetising.
