Is Espresso Con Panna Italian?

Like quite a lot of drinks, no one seems to know where it actually came from. But, Espresso Con Panna is Italian for “espresso with cream”. So lets just leave it there.

If you’re in France they’ll call it a Café Viennois. In other places it’s called a Caffe Con Panna.

Some people call it an Espresso Conpanna but this is incorrect.

It’s normally served in a demitasse cup.

What is in an Espresso Con Panna?

A shot (or double shot) of espresso and whipped cream.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons of whipped cream
  • a single or double shot of espresso

This Fruit and Nut Espresso from Pact Coffee is a great choice of coffee for this recipe.

Instructions:

  • Brew your shot of espresso
  • Whip the cream until stiff peaks form
  • Dollop the whipped cream on top of your espresso

Notes:

You can whip the cream by hand or with an electric mixer until it’s light and fluffy. You can add flavourings like vanilla, maple syrup or sugar at this point. Traditionally you should use a heavy cream, but it’s not essential.

Feeling super-lazy? Use squirty cream.

Make it as per the recipe above. Grab it and chuck it back in one gulp, or sip it slowly. The choice is yours.

What is an Espresso Con Panna at Starbucks?

Quoting their description: “Espresso meets a dollop of whipped cream to enhance the rich and caramelly flavors of a straight-up shot.”

But according to the ingredients it has a bit of vanilla syrup in the whipped cream as well.
