Plastic free coffee company Alpaca Coffee is born out of a Trek to South America

We recently caught up with Victoria Halina Poon of Alpaca Coffee, who’s on a mission to bring plastic-free coffee to our homes.

So, how did it all happen for the plastic-free Alpaca Coffee?

When Victoria went on her trip to South America, little did she know that it would turn into a journey to start reducing plastic packaging in the supply chain.

But that’s where the idea to supply plastic-free coffee started.

Then she got home and started doing some research. She discovered that plastic was a pretty standard component in coffee packaging.

“Once I started trying to figure out how to get the idea off the ground, I realised a lot of coffee companies packaged the lining of their coffee bags with plastic, which is something I had to change straight away”

Alpaca Coffee gets a Kick Start

Next, Victoria created a Kickstarter campaign online. It turned out to be a great success, raising more than double her projected target. Alpaca Coffee was born.

Plastic Free Packaging for Alpaca Coffee

“When Alpaca Coffee was born, we knew from the get-go that we didn’t want our business to contribute to a world with over 320 million tons of plastic pollution.”

“That’s why we’re a committed plastic free company, and that doesn’t mean that the quality of our coffee is compromised. We’re proud to say that our packaging won’t end up in the ocean or somewhere across the world. And our coffee is genuinely good (if we may say so ourselves).”

“We make it easier for everyone to have really good coffee and reduce their plastic consumption at the same time. Better coffee for you, and more respect for the planet.”

The coffee bags are made from a material that called NatureFlex™ which is made from wood pulp. It’s static-free, heat sealable and impermeable to moisture.

How about the coffee?

“Our coffees come from single farms, estates and cooperatives in South and Central America – We work with producers who care about social impact, for example our Brazilian single origin comes from a female-run estate, and our Peruvian coffee comes from a farm that aims to plant 100,000 trees per year”

“We’re proudly committed to being a sustainable coffee company, making it easier for everyone to drink great coffee and reduce their plastic consumption at the same time”.

Check them out and treat yourself.
