Potato Milk is now in the UK. Mooove over, cows!

We’re going to try really hard to limit the puns here; I mean seriously, when we’re talking about milk and potatoes the options are endless.

We’ll try keep it factual and to the point!

Potato milk has arrived in the UK, and the Dug brand potato milk has been launched in 220 Waitrose stores this week.

So, is potato milk a thing?

Sure it is!

We’ve written in the past about Oatly and other vegan milk alternatives, and it’s a trend that’s only going one way—and that’s up.

And there’s a big demand already: Waitrose have said that their 2021 sales of plant-based milks were a fifth higher than in 2019.

Alice Shrubsall, Waitrose’s Alternative Milk Buyer (how’s that for a job title?) said that milk alternative demand had “gone from strength-to-strength over the past few years” and added that “Demand hasn’t slowed in this market and we’re seeing customers become more experimental with their alternative milk choices.”

But really, why the name Dug?

We’re a little perturbed about the name “Dug”. Sure, we get it. Potatoes are dug from the ground. But hey, look up the dictionary definition of “dug”, and you get “the mamma of a female mammal.” Was this intentional?

Either way, we literally cannot stop thinking about this now. And we can’t stop giggling.

What does potato milk taste like?

Dug describes their M*lk as “deliciously creamy”, and ideal for creating the “perfect foam” for your coffee.

It’s supposed to have a neutral flavour, so it can be used in coffee, tea, cereal or even in cooking without taking over the taste of the dish.

Not everyone is so impressed though!

Is potato milk nice?

One Amazon review said “This tasted alright – a bit acidic and watery, but not too bad. It foamed well for latte, but split in tea”.

Another one said that it’s “it’s ever-so-slightly bitter, but works really well with coffee and was something that I got used to quickly.”

Meanwhile, others were more complimentary:

“Love its creamy and very subtle sweet taste, perfect in your hot drinks!”

And another:

“Absolutely astounded by how similar this milk is to cows milk, I will definitely be a Dug drinker from now on. A perfect “alternative” for whatever your reason, I love it! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐”

Who owns Dug potato milk?

DUG is owned by Veg of Lund, a Swedish company. Veg of Lund is “an innovative Swedish company, rooted in scientific food research at Lund University”.

Dug potato milk is made in the UK and doesn’t only contain spuds, but also pea protein and rapeseed oil.
