Pret Express: Are Pret A Manger are heading down the vending tube?

Last month, Pret A Manger had their application to trademark “Pret Express” approved.

We’ve written previously about the impact of Covid-19 on high street coffee shops, and Pret has been hit, like all of them.

Buy they’ve done a neat little pivot and offered their coffee subscription which has been wildly popular with consumers. Not so popular with independent coffee shops though!

PS – there’s a hack to get free coffee for a month, here’s how.

Pret Express trademark approved

So here’s the next pivot: It looks like Pret A Manger are heading into coffee vending machines. Last month their application to trademark the name “PRET EXPRESS” was approved. You can see the details here.

The categories they’re approved under include classes relating to “coffee vending and dispensing machines”, “coffee-based beverages”, “non-alcoholic drinks” and “self-service coffee bars”.

Pret have stayed a bit tight-lipped about the whole thing. They told the Financial Times that “We don’t comment on speculation and we obviously take out trademarks all the time”.

The self service market is changing

Expect to see some fierce competition in the coming months and years; for example Costa Coffee have introduced their new “Costa Express Hot & Iced Drinks Machine” in about 40 locations across Bristol.

And likewise Carluccio’s have got an aggressive rollout planned over the next 5 years as well – watch this space.
